Orbital complications of rhinosinusitis in the adult population: Analysis of cases presenting to a tertiary medical center over a 13-year period
Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology Feb 25, 2019
El Mograbi A, et al. - Researchers sought to share their experience with the management of orbital complications of rhinosinusitis in the adult patient population. Further, they investigated the key factors in the characteristics and management of these patients. They identified 70 patients with median age at diagnosis of 38 years. Compared to the pediatric population, more common occurrence of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) was noted among adults with orbital complications of rhinosinusitis, with previous sinus surgery and orbital wall dehiscence being noticeably common. More severe complications were observed among older patients. In patients with preseptal and orbital cellulitis, they suggest undertaking conservative treatment. Surgical drainage is advocated for more advanced stages with excellent results.
