Orbital complications of acute bacterial rhinosinusitis in the pediatric population: A systematic review and meta-analysis
International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology May 09, 2020
Zhao EA, Koochakzadeh S, Nguyen SA, et al. - Researchers investigated characteristics and outcomes of orbital complications of acute bacterial rhinosinusitis (ABRS) in the pediatric population. Further, they examined their trends over time. Performing a literature search of pediatric orbital complications in Ovid MEDLINE, Scopus, and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, they identified 35 studies for inclusion in this study. Published literature showed no change in the demographics of pediatric patients treated for orbital complications of ABRS. In more recently published studies, reported patients less frequently presented with orbital abscess and more frequently underwent conservative treatment. Further, a decrease was noted in the proportion of positive Streptococcus pneumoniae cultures.
