Oral ondansetron for pediatric gastroenteritis in primary care: A randomized controlled trial
British Journal of General Practice Oct 06, 2021
Bonvanie IJ, Weghorst AAH, Holtman GA, et al. - Children with acute gastroenteritis who are at high risk of dehydration due to vomiting could be treated in primary care with ondansetron to reduce vomiting and increase parental satisfaction with treatment. Such findings have the potential to improve the quality and efficacy of general practice medicine.
A total of 194 children were involved in randomization.
With an odds ratio of 0.37, one dose of oral ondansetron reduced the proportion of children who continued vomiting within 4 hours from 42.9% to 19.5%.
Ondansetron also reduced the number of vomiting episodes within 4 hours and increased parental satisfaction with the treatment overall.
