Oral corticosteroid use, obesity, and ethnicity in children with asthma
Journal of Asthma Oct 19, 2019
Lucas JA, Marino M, Fankhauser K, et al. - Using electronic health record data from the ADVANCE (Accelerating Data Value Across a National Community Health Center Network) national network of community health centers, researchers investigated if there was a link between obesity and increased oral steroid prescription for children with asthma. They also looked at potential differences in these links between Latino and non-Hispanic white children. Participants were 16,763 children aged 5–17 years suffering from asthma and had ≥ 1 ambulatory visit in ADVANCE clinics across 22 states. In order to determine the rate of oral steroid prescription overall and by ethnicity, controlling for potential confounders, Poisson regression analysis was used. Findings revealed the receipt of more oral steroid prescriptions in children with obesity vs those at a healthy weight, which may be suggestive of worse asthma control. No significant ethnic disparities were evident.
