Oral contraceptives partially protect from bone loss in young women with anorexia nervosa
Fertility and Sterility Mar 30, 2019
Maïmoun L, et al. - In 305 patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) (99 of them using OC), the possibly protective impact of oral contraceptives (OC) on bone loss were determined via evaluating areal bone mineral density (aBMD) on them and 121 age-matched controls. AN patients taking OC had lower aBMD vs the controls at all bone sites, the whole body excepted, but had systematically higher aBMD when compared to those of AN patients who were not taking OC for the whole body and the lumbar spine, femoral neck, hip, and radius. The data thereby suggest that prescription of OC could be useful for young women with AN to limit their bone loss despite achieving no total protection of aBMD with OC.
