Oral consumption of Garcinia kola (Bitter kola) lowers intraocular pressure
Acta Ophthalmologica Dec 16, 2020
Ilechie AA, Jeduah MM, Abraham CH, et al. - Using a randomized, single‐blind, placebo‐controlled, cross‐over design, researchers evaluated the impact of oral ingestion of Garcinia kola (bitter kola) on intraocular pressure (IOP). Forty‐six healthy individuals, aged between 19 and 27 years were enrolled and randomized into two groups (A and B). Participants in group A ingested 100 mg/kg body weight bitter kola in a 200 ml solution on their first visit and ingested 200 ml of water in group B. During the second visit, the order of treatment was reversed, IOP was assessed at baseline and every 45 min interval for 135 min. According to results, oral ingestion of G. kola reduced the IOP of healthy young adults by 21%. In low‐income settings, such an effect can be of therapeutic benefit to patients with POAG or ocular hypertension.
