Oral cancer on the gingiva in patients with proliferative leukoplakia: A study of 30 cases
Journal of Periodontology May 15, 2019
Bagan J, et al. - Patients with gingival proliferative leukoplakia (PL) with and without progression to oral squamous cell carcinoma were compared regarding their clinical features. Two groups of the patients were formed: group 1 comprised 33 patients with gingival PL that did not progress to cancer, and group 2 comprised 30 patients with PL, who developed malignant transformation during follow-up. Findings revealed gingival cancer in significant correlation to the simultaneous presence of lesions on the buccal mucosa, grade of lesion extension, and presence of ulcerative lesion among patients with PL. The group with cancer was mostly female and more commonly involved the buccal mucosa, tongue, and palate vs the non-cancer group.
