Optimal wound closure techniques for thyroid and parathyroid surgery: A systematic review of cosmetic outcomes
Clinical Otolaryngology Jun 05, 2019
Lee K, et al. - Researchers examined how wound closure method, using sutures, staples, steri-strips, and glue, influences the cosmetic outcome in thyroid and parathyroid surgery. Searching MEDLINE, PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL and Cochrane, they identified 304 papers and after systematic review, a total of 10 studies were identified comparing different closure methods and cosmetic outcomes. Outcomes support the achievement of superior cosmetic outcomes short-term when closure with subcuticular suture or steri-strips was done. Although the closure method does not influence long-term cosmetic outcome, they recommend performing subcuticular sutures for wound closure in thyroid and parathyroid surgery in view of the superior cosmetic outcome and advantage of not needing removal.
