Optimal wound closure techniques for thyroid and parathyroid surgery: A systematic review of cosmetic outcomes
Clinical Otolaryngology Aug 09, 2019
Lee K, et al. - Researchers examined the influence of wound closure method on cosmetic outcome in thyroid and parathyroid surgery, in particular using sutures, staples, steri-strips and glue. Searching MEDLINE, PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL and Cochrane, 304 papers were identified and after systematic review, a total of 10 studies compared different closure methods and cosmetic outcomes. The analysis revealed superior short-term cosmetic outcomes with performing closure with subcuticular suture or steri-strips. Although the closure method does no influence the long-term cosmetic outcome, researchers recommend performing subcuticular sutures for wound closure in thyroid and parathyroid surgery as it produced a superior cosmetic outcome and had the advantage of not needing removal.
