Optimal timing of cervical cerclage removal following preterm premature rupture of membranes; A retrospective analysis
European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology Feb 12, 2021
Suff N, Kunitsyna M, Shennan A, et al. - Over a third of pregnant women experience preterm prelabour rupture of membranes with a cervical cerclage in situ. As difficulties remain concerning the optimal timing for removing the cerclage in the setting of preterm prelabour rupture of membranes, researchers here compared the maternal and neonatal outcomes following immediate removal or retention of the cervical cerclage. They identified this work to be largest retrospective study examining woman following cerclage removal or retention after PPROM (Preterm prelabour rupture of membranes). Comparison was performed between 43 women with cerclage retained for over 24 hours following preterm prelabour rupture of membranes and 25 women in whom the cerclage was removed. They observed a longer latency period to delivery and a non-significant trend towards chorioamnionitis in correlation with cervical cerclage retention in women following PPROM. A non-significant trend towards chorioamnionitis was observed in correlation with cervical cerclage retention in women following PPROM.
