Optimal lymphadenectomy in small bowel neuroendocrine tumors: Analysis of the NCDB
Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery Sep 05, 2017
Motz BM, et al. – Current National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines for resectable small bowel neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) recommend regional lymphadenectomy. Authors aimed to focus on optimal lymphadenectomy in these tumors. They identified high rates of nodal metastasis were evident with small bowel NETs, even in patients with small tumors, and many patients did not undergo lymphadenectomy despite the clear benefit. It seemed that lymphadenectomy of eight nodes was optimal to identify node positive (N+) patients. Furthermore, minimizing metastatic node ratio with complete regional lymphadenectomy was associated with improved survival in these patients.
