Opportunities for palliative care in patients with burn injury – A systematic review
Journal of Pain and Symptom Management Dec 04, 2019
Cook AC, et al. - Researchers conducted a systematic review of existing evidence regarding the needs of burn patients for palliative care. They systematically searched PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus through November 26, 2018, using terms representing burn injuries and the eight domains of quality palliative care as outlined by the National Consensus Project for Quality Palliative Care. The searches yielded 7,532 unique records, resulting in 238 full review manuscripts and 88 inclusion criteria reports. End-of-life decision making protocols were related to increased utilization of comfort-focused treatments in severe injuries patients. Most existing burn patient-related palliative care research addresses physical symptom interventions with minimal literature related to other domains. There are opportunities for further research on palliative care in burn populations with a focus on: addressing interventions for all domains and better standardizing the language and outcomes for interventions in palliative care.
