Opportunistic screening of patients for hepatic steatosis: Clinical follow-up and diagnostic yield
Journal of the American College of Radiology May 31, 2021
Penna R, Lim J, Williams BL, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to explore the correlation of opportunistic screening for hepatic steatosis with subsequent acknowledgment or clinical action to address hepatic steatosis and the diagnostic yield of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and other etiologies of hepatic steatosis. In total, 1,256 patients had their reports tagged between April 2016 and September 2017 and their electronic medical records were reviewed to determine subsequent acknowledgement in the medical record or clinical action in response to the tagged report. In patients who underwent clinical evaluation, the overall diagnostic yield was NAFLD in 70%, NASH in 6%, and alcoholic hepatitis in 17%. Opportunistic screening for incidental hepatic steatosis using abdominal CT and ultrasound is feasible, with a high yield for patients with clinically significant conditions such as NAFLD and NASH.
