Riddle DL, et al. - Researchers analyzed preoperative opioid use data describing type of opioid, dosage, and frequency among 397 patients scheduled for knee arthroplasty (KA) to assess the prevalence of opioid use and to compare patterns of preoperative opioid use and oral morphine equivalent (OME), a measure of daily opioid dose, across varied geographic sites. In this work, baseline variables associated with opioid use and OME were also explored. Current evidence does not reveal increased preoperative opioid use among people who catastrophized prior to KA, however, there was substantial variation in the prevalence of opioid use across study sites. Non-modifiable demographic and comorbidity variables were the variables associated with opioid use.
