Opioid use, misuse, and suicidal behaviors in a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults

American Journal of Epidemiology Mar 09, 2019

Samples H, et al. - Researchers used the data from 2015-2016 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, to evaluate the links between opioid use and misuse to suicidal ideation, suicide plans, and suicide attempts among 86,186 adults 18-64 years old. They analyzed nationally representative cross-sectional data. They determined the links between opioid use/misuse and suicidal behaviors by using logistic regression. They also assessed the counterfactual scenario in which individuals with misuse had instead not misused opioids, by using propensity score weighted logistic regression. Findings revealed that, compared to individuals with opioid misuse, an attenuated risk of suicidal behaviors was seen among similar individuals without misuse. Misuse should be prevented by implementing clinical and public health interventions.
