Opioid use following THA â Trends and risk factors for prolonged use
Journal of Arthroplasty Aug 28, 2017
Bedard NA et al. – This study investigated the prevalence of opioid use prior to primary total hip arthroplasty (THA), the typical trend of opioid use following THA over the first postoperative year, and the risk factors for prolonged opioid use following primary THA by analyzing primary THA patients in the Humana database from 2007 to 2015. It was found that over one–third of THA patients use opioids within 3 months prior to THA and that this has increased by 6% during the time period of this study. It was also determined that preoperative opioid use was most predictive of increased refills of opioids following THA, and younger age, female sex, and all other diagnoses significantly increased the rate of opioid refilling following THA. The data provided by this study can be used by prescribers to identify the risk factors for prolonged use.
