Opioid use following bariatric surgery: Results of a prospective survey
Obesity Surgery Dec 14, 2019
Ehlers AP, et al. - Researchers surveyed bariatric surgery patients at a single center at the time of their postoperative visit (January–May 2018) in order to determine opioid use following bariatric surgery. They assessed 33 patients; of these, 29 (88%) were female with a median age of 40 (20–68) and body mass index of 44.8 (33–78.5). They identified Despite leftover opioids among most patients following surgery, however, there were only a few patients who possibly had overprescription. Education regarding opioid use following surgery is inconsistent, this may potentially be contributing to the number of retained opioids currently available. They recommend focussing on ascertaining the proper amount of opioids to be prescribed following surgery and standardizing and promoting education given to patients, in future guidelines.
