Opioid use after minimally invasive hysterectomy in gynecologic oncology patients

Gynecologic Oncology Aug 15, 2019

Weston E, Raker C, Huang D, et al. - In this prospective cohort study, researchers investigated gynecologic oncology patients undergoing minimally invasive hysterectomy (MIH) for the quantification and determination of predictors of post-discharge opioid use in these individuals. Using chart review and surveys at 1-2-week and 4-6-week postoperative visits, they assessed postoperative opioid use. Overall 118 eligible women had MIH, with complete data available for 108 women. A median of 30.75 morphine milligram equivalents (MME) was received by inpatients. An observation period of 1-2-weeks revealed median usage of six pills of 5 mg oxycodone, or 45 MME. Overall, overprescription of opioids as compared with their use was reported in this cohort. Postdischarge opioid use was most strongly predicted by inpatient use. In order to attenuate opioid misuse and diversion, more restrictive, and personalized, opioid prescribing practices may be of help.
