Opioid use after discharge following primary unilateral total knee arthroplasty: How much are we over-prescribing
Journal of Arthroplasty Feb 13, 2020
Runner RP, et al. - This analysis intended to assess postoperative opioid use after hospital discharge for primary unilateral total knee arthroplasty (TKA) patients. Researchers conducted a prospective cohort including a total of 89 primary unilateral TKA individuals by one of 5 senior fellowship-trained arthroplasty surgeons at a single institution. They conducted a statistical analysis using a student t-test with α < 0.05. The data demonstrated that significantly more narcotics were prescribed than were taken in the post-operative period following TKA with an average of 53.1 excess narcotic pills per individual. It was showed that adjusting prescribing patterns to match individual narcotic usage could decrease the excess narcotic pills following TKA.
