Opioid-sparing effect of liposomal bupivacaine and intravenous acetaminophen in colorectal surgery
Journal of Surgical Research Oct 14, 2020
Rizk E, Haas EM, Swan JT, et al. - Researchers investigated the opioid-sparing effect of liposomal bupivacaine and intravenous acetaminophen in colorectal surgery via performing a retrospective, 2 × 2 factorial cohort study of patients undergoing open or minimally invasive colorectal resection. A total of 486 patients were included; of these, 193 were administered both liposomal bupivacaine and intravenous acetaminophen, 93 were administered liposomal bupivacaine only, 104 were administered intravenous acetaminophen only, and 96 were not administered either of these. Outcomes revealed correlation of administering liposomal bupivacaine with a significant reduction of opioid use within 24 h after colorectal surgery, but not of intravenous acetaminophen.
