Opioid prescription patterns and use among patients undergoing endoscopic sinus surgery
The Laryngoscope Apr 25, 2019
Sethi RKV, et al. - In the retrospective chart review, researchers assessed the patient-reported opioid use following endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) and also to characterize its provider prescription patterns in 155 participants. They observed that about 94.8% of cases who underwent ESS were prescribed an opioid, and nearly all subjects filled their prescription. Although, most of the candidates did not require any opioid medication for postoperative pain control. They found significantly greater the mean number of tablets prescribed among patients who underwent primary vs revision surgery (16.5 vs 13.5) and those who had splints placed (21.5 vs 15.1). Concurrent turbinate reduction (58.3% vs 14.3%) and concurrent septoplasty were the predictors of opioid use.
