Opiate prescribing practices after common isolated lower extremity injuries

Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma Feb 22, 2019

Rodriguez-Buitrago A, et al. - Between 2005 and 2016, authors evaluated 341 cases to quantify the opiate prescribing practices after common isolated lower extremity (unicondylar, bicondylar, tibial shaft, pilon, and ankle) injuries. A fraction of 159 candidates had prescribed opiates before their injury. They noted that orthopedic providers prescribed more opiates to subjects with pilon fractures as compared to individuals with unicondylar, tibial shaft, and ankle fractures. They found variations in orthopedic and nonorthopedic morphine milligram equivalents (MMEs) prescribed for each injury type.
