Operating room extubation: A predictive factor for 1-year survival after double-lung transplantation
The Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation Feb 26, 2021
Fessler J, Fischler M, Sage E, et al. - Researchers sought to evaluate the prognosis of patients undergoing operating room (OR) extubation after lung transplantation (LT). In addition, they examined the safety of this approach and sought its predictive factors. They performed this retrospective single-center cohort study by including 450 patients undergoing double lung transplantation (DLT). Of these patients, 161 (35.8%) were extubated in the OR, and 4 were reintubated within 24 hours. Outcomes suggest association of OR extubation with a favorable prognosis after DLT, but they emphasize not interpreting this correlation as causality. A team committed to developing a comprehensive approach to improve recovery made this fast-track protocol possible.
