Open reduction and internal fixation of ankle fracture using wide-awake local anaesthesia no tourniquet technique
Injury Mar 17, 2019
Li YS, et al. - Researchers evaluated the outcomes of the wide-awake local anaesthesia no tourniquet (WALANT) technique in open reduction and internal fixation of ankle fracture. They used a solution of 1% lidocaine mixed with 1:40000 epinephrine for WALANT in 13 consecutive patients (9 males and 4 females) who presented ankle fractures and required ORIF from January 2017 to December 2017. WALANT was noted to simplify surgical preparations and was identified as safe and reliable for ankle fracture management. They observed reduced postsurgical pain as the use of a tourniquet was not required. Furthermore, the use of local anaesthesia led to more satisfaction among patients and aided easier recovery.
