One-unit compared to two-unit platelet transfusions for adult oncology outpatients
Vox Sanguinis May 10, 2019
Gehrie EA, et al. - Via this retrospective chart review of all adult oncology patients who got an outpatient platelet transfusion, researchers assessed transfusion indices following 1-unit and 2-unit apheresis platelet transfusions in order to determine if there was a benefit to 2-unit transfusions. In total, 602 patients received 8, 467 platelet transfusions over the study period. A higher immediate post-transfusion platelet count and a lower corrected count increment was observed in relation to a 2-unit platelet transfusions. Neither the number of days between outpatient transfusions nor the platelet count at the time of the next transfusion were higher with transfusion with 2 platelets. Findings revealed that neither a durable improvement in platelet count nor any influence on the subsequent transfusion schedule was seen in relation to transfusion with two platelets among adult, oncology outpatients that were transfused interchangeably with one or two units of platelets.
