One-surgeon vs two-surgeon single-anesthetic bilateral total knee arthroplasty: Revision and mortality rates from the Australian orthopedic association National joint replacement registry
Journal of Arthroplasty Apr 02, 2020
Gill SD, et al. - The present study was undertaken to compare revision rates and all-cause mortality following sequential bilateral total knee arthroplasty (seq-BTKA) vs simultaneous bilateral total knee arthroplasty (sim-BTKA) using data from the Australian Orthopedic Association National Joint Replacement Registry. Researchers examined Seq-BTKA and sim-BTKA procedures recorded within the registry between September 1, 1999 and December 31, 2018 for subsequent revision and patient mortality. Via Kaplan-Meier method, cumulative percent revision and cumulative percent survival were ascertained. They compared revision and mortality rates for sim-BTKA and seq-BTKA by applying Cox proportional hazards models, adjusting for age and gender. The study found similar revision rates and mortality for seq-BTKA and sim-BTKA. Evaluation of additional outcomes such as complications not requiring revision, pain, function, and cost is needed to comprehensively understand the relative merits of each technique.
