One-stage sequential bilateral total knee arthroplasty: An effective treatment for advanced bilateral knee osteoarthritis providing high patient satisfaction
Journal of Arthroplasty Sep 30, 2019
Putnis S, et al. - Two cohorts of 394 individuals were created via propensity matching for gender, age, BMI, American Society of Anesthesiologists grade, and Veterans Rand-12 health survey scores in order to ascertain whether mortality and risks of bilateral total knee arthroplasty (BTKA) to be far higher than in unilateral total knee arthroplasty (UTKA) continued to be the case using contemporary anesthetic and surgical techniques for one-stage single anesthetic sequential BTKA. In the majority of patients, BTKA was safe and efficient. Transfusion rates were far lower in comparison with historically reported and major complications were rare following both UTKA and BTKA. A meaningful rise in the rate of PE following BTKA was noted, particularly in high-risk patients. Moreover, cohorts had the same important clinical betterment and a high level of satisfaction at a minimum of one-year postoperatively.
