One-stage exchange with antibacterial hydrogel coated implants provides similar results to two-stage revision, without the coating, for the treatment of peri-prosthetic infection

Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy Mar 22, 2018

Capuano N, et al. - Herein researchers aimed to verify the presumption that a one-stage exchange procedure, performed with an antibiotic-loaded, fast-resorbable hydrogel coating, provided similar infection recurrence rate than a two-stage procedure without the coating, in cases affected by peri-prosthetic joint infection (PJI). Compared with two-stage revision without coating, one-stage exchange with a defensive antibacterial coating (DAC)-coated implants provided similar infection recurrence rate and reduced overall hospitalization time and antibiotic treatment duration.
