Oncologic outcomes of extended neck dissections in human papillomavirus-related oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma
Head & Neck May 04, 2018
Zenga J, et al. - Authors evaluated the oncologic outcomes of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) requiring resection of major muscular or neurovascular tissue during neck dissection for an invasive nodal disease. Management of patients with invasive nodal disease from HPV-related oropharyngeal SCC could be done with up-front surgery and adjuvant therapy, as indicated with good regional control. Distant recurrence was the primary site of failure, however, an association of adjuvant chemotherapy with improved outcomes was not noted. In this patient population, the T classification, node number, and adjuvant radiotherapy were independent prognostic factors.
