OLFM4 polymorphisms predict septic shock survival after major surgery
European Journal of Clinical Investigation Oct 20, 2020
Pérez‐García F, Resino S, Gómez‐Sánchez E, et al. - In view of the reported association of higher expression of olfactomedin‐4 (OLFM4), a gene regulated by nuclear factor‐kappa B (NF‐κB), with a higher risk of organ failure and death in patients with septic shock, researchers here determined if and how OLFM4 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associate with septic shock‐related death in 175 patients who underwent major surgery. Further, they assessed its performance in predicting mortality. An AUROC of 0.776 was generated for predicting septic shock‐related death by the multivariate model with the most significant clinical variables (lactate, chronic kidney disease, peritonitis, heart disease and elective surgery). The AUROC generated was 0.811 when the OLFM4 rs17552047 SNP was added to the previous model, which was close to attaining significant differences with the previous model. Overall, findings suggest OLFM4 rs17552047 A allele as predictive of septic shock survival in patients who underwent major surgery. Further, they indicate rs17552047, together with clinical variables, as valuable for predicting the outcome of septic shock.
