Olfactory function is impaired in patients with mastocytosis
The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice Oct 15, 2020
Masala C, Firinu D, Piras R, et al. - Researchers explored odor threshold, discrimination as well as identification in mastocytosis patients vs age-matched healthy controls. They also correlated olfactory function with the other clinical symptoms of mastocytosis. This study involved 81 participants, including 41 patients with mastocytosis and 40 healthy controls. According to the findings, patients experienced impaired olfactory function vs healthy controls; a significant negative correlation was identified between TDI score and the concentration of serum tryptase. In the light of these data, olfactory dysfunction in mastocytosis may be regarded as one of the clinical manifestations contributing to the burden of this disease.
