Olfactory function in systemic lupus erythematosus and systemic sclerosis: A longitudinal study and review of the literature
Autoimmunity Reviews Feb 19, 2018
Bombini MF, et al. - This study entailed an assessment of olfactory function in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), systemic sclerosis (SSc) and healthy controls over a 2-year period. Additionally, researchers determined the association of olfactory dysfunction with age, disease activity, disease damage, treatment, anxiety and depression symptoms and limbic structures volumes. Significant reduction in all stages of Sniffin’ Sticks test (TDI), maintained stable over a 2-year period, was noted among both SLE and SSc patients with longstanding disease. Olfactory dysfunction was found to be related to age, inflammation and hippocampi and amygdalae volumes. Additional association with anti-ribosomal P (anti-P), anxiety and depression symptoms was observed in SLE.
