Olanzapine vs placebo in adult outpatients with anorexia nervosa: A randomized clinical trial
American Journal of Psychiatry Jan 25, 2019
Attia E, et al. - In this randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial of adult outpatients with anorexia nervosa (N=152, 96% of whom were women; the sample’s mean body mass index [BMI] was 16.7), the benefits of olanzapine compared with placebo were evaluated. They administered olanzapine to 75 participants and placebo to 77 participants. Findings suggest that olanzapine has a modest therapeutic effect on weight in these adults when compared with placebo, but had no significant benefit for psychological symptoms. Nevertheless, the finding on weight is significant in view of the notorious challenges observed in achieving change in weight in this disorder.
