Office-based steroid injections for idiopathic subglottic stenosis: Patient-reported outcomes, effect on stenosis, and side effects

Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology Nov 29, 2019

Hoffman MR, et al. - Given the promising value of office-based steroid injection for idiopathic subglottic stenosis, researchers here sought to report on patient experience related to airway restriction, voice, and side effects. They assessed 16 patients (51 ± 14 years) with mild-moderate (20-50%) stenosis who underwent three office-based transnasal steroid injections, 1 month apart. Fourteen had prior operations. Transnasal tracheoscopy was performed on patients to evaluate outcomes; Based on disease severity and response, number of injections can vary. Outcomes revealed improvement in upper airway symptoms following steroid injections. The patients experienced mild and transient side effects. No correlation of Dyspnea Index Improvement with percent stenosis was noted.
