Ocular toxoplasmosis: Phenotype differences between toxoplasma IgM positive and IgM negative patients in a large cohort
British Journal of Ophthalmology May 01, 2020
Ajamil-Rodanes S, Luis J, Bourkiza R, et al. - Researchers examined how demographics and clinical characteristics of patients diagnosed with ocular toxoplasmosis differ with respect to their IgM status. In this retrospective case note analysis, 106 patients were included; of these, 37 tested positive for serum Toxoplasma gondii-specific IgM antibodies (IgM+) and 69 tested negative for serum IgM (IgM-), but positive for serum IgG. Per observations, clinical characteristics of ocular toxoplasmosis differed significantly according to serum IgM status. IgM+ patients were significantly older (51.1 vs 34.1 years), less frequently report pain, had lower levels of intraocular inflammation, but more frequently had macular involvement. Age was identified to be associated with larger and more peripheral lesions.
