Octogenarians exhibit quality of life improvement but increased morbidity after paraesophageal hernia repair
American Journal of Surgery Oct 12, 2019
Jalilvand A, et al. - A retrospective analysis contrasting octogenarians (n = 23) to younger patients (n = 162) who underwent elective laparoscopic paraesophageal hernia repair (eLPEHR), was conducted in order to compare the quality of life and symptom resolution and morbidity following eLPEHR between octogenarians and younger individuals. Higher ASA and lower preoperative BMI was presented by octogenarians. In contrast with controls, greater overall morbidity, including cardiac events and mortality, and longer LOS, was shown by the octogenarians. The postoperative decrease in disease-specific quality of life and symptom scales scores was similar among groups. Hence, in quality of life and symptom burden, octogenarians who undergo eLPEHR show meaningful betterment, however, it could encounter progressed morbidity, implying a role for vigilant waiting in this population.
