Obstructive sleep apnoea in children and adolescents with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome

Respiration Dec 01, 2018

Stöberl AS, et al. - In paediatric Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), the prevalence of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) was examined in this prospective cross-sectional study including a total of 24 children with EDS recruited from the Children’s Hospital Zurich and matched to healthy controls. Using home respiratory polygraphy and questionnaires (Sleep-Related Breathing Disorder Scale [SRBD], Epworth Sleepiness Scale [ESS], and Child Health Questionnaire [CHQ]), participants were examined. Diagnosis of OSA (obstructive apnoea-hypopnoea index [oAHI] ≥1/h) was made by applying the American Academy of Sleep Medicine criteria. According to findings, OSA is a previously underestimated EDS-related complication and its presence increases disease burden. EDS patients vs controls had a higher median oAHI and lower scores in most CHQ scales and higher SRBD and ESS scores.
