Obstructive sleep apnoea and the risk for coronary heart disease and type 2 diabetes: A longitudinal population-based study in Finland
BMJ Open Oct 19, 2018
Strausz S, et al. - A longitudinal population-based study of 36,963 people (>500,000 person years) with up to 25 years of follow-up was conducted to explore whether or not obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) impacts the risk of coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes (T2D) and diabetic complications and if the results are gender-specific. The results obtained from three population-based cohorts (the FINRISK study, the Health 2000 Cohort Study and the Botnia Study) indicate that for coronary heart disease, T2D and diabetic kidney disease, OSA independently predicts risk. Findings suggested that this effect is more pronounced in women, who haven’t received as much attention in diagnosis and treatment of OSA as men.
