Obsessive-compulsive disorder and dementia risk: A nationwide longitudinal study
The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry May 15, 2021
Chen MH, Cheng CM, Tsai SJ, et al. - Utilizing the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, researchers intended to determine if there is an association between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and dementia. One thousand three hundred forty-seven patients with OCD aged ≥ 45 years and 13,470 controls matched for age, gender, residence, income, and dementia-related comorbidities were involved between 1996 and 2013 for investigation of subsequent dementia from registration to the end of 2013. When compared with controls, patients with OCD had a higher risk of developing any dementia, Alzheimer disease, or vascular dementia. Future research into the pathogenic mechanisms and molecular underpinnings of the link between OCD and dementia could lead to the development of novel therapeutics.
