Obesity is associated with increased risk of colectomy in inflammatory bowel disease patients hospitalized with Clostridium difficile infection
Digestive Diseases and Sciences Dec 22, 2018
Shrestha MP, et al. - Using data from the National Inpatient Sample across five study years (2010–2014), researchers analyzed the impact of obesity on Clostridium difficile infection (CDI)-related morbidity and mortality in hospitalized patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Study participants included patients ≥ 18 years hospitalized with both CDI and IBD. As compared to non-obese IBD–CDI patients, obese IBD–CDI patients had a 60% higher risk of colectomy, longer hospital length of stay, and higher hospital charges. However, there was no significant mortality difference between obese and non-obese IBD–CDI patients.
