Obesity is a risk factor for exercise‐induced bronchospasm in asthmatic adolescents
Pediatric Pulmonology Jun 11, 2020
de Almeida AHS, de Albuquerque Rodrigues Filho E, Costa EL, et al. - Researchers performed this inquiry among asthmatic children and adolescents, to determine the link between obesity and the risk as well as the severity of exercise‐induced bronchospasm (EIB) in these patients. Patients aged between 7 and 19 years, who were suffering from asthma, were included. Data were analyzed from patients undergoing treadmill running tests to assess EIB which was defined as a decrease greater than or equal to 10% in forced expiratory volume in the first second vs baseline. Eutrophic, obese, and overweight people were grouped based on BMI z‐score (eutrophic, −0.5 < z ≤ 1; overweight, 1 < z < 2; and obese, z ≥ 2). Findings revealed a greater risk for EIB with slower recovery in obese youngsters with asthma vs their nonobese peers. Asthma severity was identified as another independent risk factor for EIB. For proper identification and management, clinicians are advised to be aware of this link, particularly in those with more severe disease.
