Obesity in young children and its relationship with diagnosis of asthma, vitamin D deficiency, iron deficiency, specific allergies and flat‐footedness: A systematic review and meta‐analysis
Obesity Reviews Feb 12, 2021
Malden S, Gillespie J, Hughes A, et al. - Because there exists evidence that a number of medical conditions as well as co‐morbidities are related to obesity in young children, therefore, researchers conducted this review to ascertain if there exists evidence of links with other conditions or co‐morbidities. By exploring five databases (MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, AMED and SPORTDiscus), experts identified observational studies of young children (mean age < 10 years). This analysis involved 41 eligible studies (including 44 comparisons), which afforded data on: asthma (n = 16), vitamin D deficiency (n = 10), iron deficiency (n = 10), allergies (n = 4) and flat‐footedness (n = 4). For meta‐analysis using random‐effects models, 32 studies were suitable. A significant association of obesity with having asthma, vitamin D deficiency and iron deficiency was revealed. Experts found no evidence of a consistent link between obesity in young children and eczema, dermatitis or rhinitis because of the low number of studies. However, a link with flat‐footedness was evident.
