Obesity in childhood, socioeconomic status, and completion of 12 or more school years: A prospective cohort study
BMJ Open Mar 19, 2021
Lindberg L, Persson M, Danielsson P, et al. - In this nationwide prospective cohort study, experts aspired to explore whether individuals with obesity in childhood are less likely to complete ≥ 12 years of schooling, independently of parental socioeconomic status (SES), as well as to study how weight loss, level of education and parental SES are associated. Children, aged 10 to 17 years, recorded in the Swedish Childhood Obesity Treatment Register, and aged 20 years or older at follow-up were involved (n = 3,942). People with obesity in childhood have lower chances of completing ≥ 12 school years, regardless of parental SES. Optimised obesity treatment may improve academic performance in this group.
