Miles RC, Lehman CD, Mercaldo SF, et al. - Given that an elevated breast cancer risk and increased breast cancer morbidity and mortality have been reported in postmenopausal obese women vs women with a normal body mass index (BMI), researchers evaluated the current link between increasing BMI and use of mammography screening. They used national cross-sectional survey data from the 2016 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, which represents a state-based national telephone survey of noninstitutionalized adults in the United States, to assess this association. In contrast to previous reports, findings of this study revealed no link between obesity and adherence to screening mammography. A possible association of these results with the growing social acceptance of obesity among women from all racial/ethnic groups and the elimination of weight-related facility-level blocks overtime was suggested.
