Nutritional supplements for neuropsychiatric symptoms in people with dementia: A systematic review and meta‐analysis
International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry Aug 21, 2020
Haider S, Schwarzinger A, Stefanac S, et al. - Among 377 people with dementia (mean age 69.3 [SD: 7.7] years) in four studies included in this systematic review and meta‐analysis, researchers evaluated if nutritional supplementation had any impact on neuropsychiatric symptoms. Studies of randomized controlled trials including people with any type of dementia with neuropsychiatric symptoms taking nutritional supplements were included. The validated Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) was used to evaluate neuropsychiatric symptoms. No significant impact on NPI was observed with nutritional supplementation. Since various supplements were used with a short follow-up time at different stages of dementia, these findings are limited.
