Nutritional status during hospitalization is associated with the long‐term prognosis of patients with heart failure
ESC Heart Failure Oct 07, 2021
Takada T, Jujo K, Inagaki K, et al. - Findings demonstrate an association between nutritional status changes during hospitalization and cardiovascular (CV) events post-discharge among patients with heart failure (HF). Therefore, improved clinical results in HF patients may be achieved by improving their nutritional status.
This is an observational study of 1705 patients hospitalized with HF who were discharged alive.
Patients were divided based on their CONtrolling NUTritional status (CONUT) scores at admission and discharge.
The highest composite endpoint rate (a composite of CV death and readmission for HF after discharge) was observed in patients with persistently high CONUT scores.
A significantly lower hazard ratio for the composite outcome was recorded for patients with high CONUT scores at admission and normal CONUT scores at discharge vs that for those with persistently high CONUT scores (hazard ratio: 0.69), post-adjustment for covariates.
