Nutritional assessment and status of hospitalized infants
Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition Aug 29, 2017
Misa M et al. – The study investigated the nutritional status of hospitalized infants using Subjective Global Nutritional Assay (SGNA) and anthropometric measurement. The association of diagnostic category with nutritional status and anthropometric scores and between malnutrition– and nutrition–focused variables was also evaluated. The authors concluded that SGNA is a comprehensive approach in identifying malnutrition in hospitalized infants.
Methods
- In all, 110 hospitalized infants were included for a nutritional status investigation using SGNA and anthropometric measures.
Results
- The study showed 70.9% of patients with normal nutritional status, 27.3% as moderately malnourished and 1.8% as severely malnourished.
- Moderately and severely malnourished infants showed significantly low anthropometric z scores.
- There was association of malnutrition with a decrease in serial weight, prolonged gastrointestinal symptoms, and reduced nutrition–related functional capacity.
