Nutrition impact symptoms are related to malnutrition and quality of life – A cross-sectional study of patients with chronic liver disease
Clinical Nutrition Aug 10, 2019
Lindqvist C, et al. - In this investigation, researchers studied the prevalence of nutrition impact symptoms (NIS) in patients with chronic liver disease, and examined the connections between NIS, malnutrition and health-related quality of life. They analyzed NIS with two questionnaires: the Eating Symptoms Questionnaire and the Disease-Related Appetite Questionnaire in a cross-sectional study on adult patients with chronic liver disease under evaluation for liver transplantation. Of the 133 patients included, 90% reported one or more NIS and 51% reported four or more NIS. Dry mouth, abdominal pain, diarrhoea and nausea were the most common symptoms. Some NIS, like pain, poor appetite, taste changes and early satiety, have been predictors of malnutrition. In patients with chronic liver disease, NIS are common and are linked to malnutrition and worse health-related quality of life. Therefore, NIS should be systematically evaluated in chronic liver disease patients. It is worth further exploring whether NIS identification and adequate management can prevent malnutrition and enhance the quality of life.
