Nutrient biomarkers shape individual differences in functional brain connectivity: Evidence from omega-3 PUFAs

Human Brain Mapping Dec 20, 2018

Talukdar T, et al. – Researchers conducted this study to determine if nutrient biomarkers, which are known to have beneficial effects on brain structure (ie, the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids [ω-3 PUFAs]), can explain individual differences in functional brain connectivity. Study participants included 96 healthy older adults. They noted an association of ω-3 PUFAs with individual differences in functional connectivity within regions that support executive function (prefrontal cortex), memory (hippocampus), and emotion (amygdala). Overall, their findings support the idea that the impact of these regions on global network connectivity reliably forecast general, fluid, and crystallized intelligence.
