NUT midline carcinoma of the lung: Computed tomography findings in 10 patients

Journal of Computer Assisted Tomography Apr 07, 2021

Chang AI, Kim TS, Han J, et al. - Researchers analyzed 10 consecutive patients (M:F, 7:3; mean, 39 years) to assess computed tomography (CT) findings of pulmonary NUT midline carcinoma. Primary tumors (size range, 15–65 mm) presented as either a peripheral tumor (5/10) or a central tumor (5/10). A relatively low-attenuation at contrast-enhanced CT (mean net enhancement, 26 HU) was demonstrated by all tumors. Metastatic hilar or mediastinal lymphadenopathy (8/10), ipsilateral pleural seeding with malignant pleural effusion (2/10), and distant metastasis (2/10) were documented as associated CT findings. Optimal treatment of five patients, with low tumor-node-metastasis stages, resulted in absence of disease (50%) for 6 to 35 months. Overall, the manifestations of pulmonary NUT carcinoma included a peripheral or a central lung mass demonstrating mild degree of contrast enhancement, frequent metastatic regional lymphadenopathy, impacting relatively young adults. Despite being highly aggressive, a favorable prognosis can be achieved via an early diagnosis in low TNM stages.
